For your essay, you will examine issues of social inequality in our society. Read the instructions and guidelines below carefully and review the grading rubric before submitting your work.

  1. Select a topic that relates to the subject matter discussed in Module 3 – Chapter 11 (Education),  Chapter 12 (Social & Economic Stratification) or  Chapter 13 (Stratification, Minorities & Discrimination).
  2. Find a NEWS article that addresses an issue that demonstrates social inequality in our society.  A news article is an article from a media source like a newspaper or magazine such as the New York Times, FOX, The Washington Post, VICE, etc. that addresses a current event. It does not include sources like Wikipedia, eHow, dictionaries, academic journals, or other information websites.
  3. After you find your initial article, do additional research on the topic.  A minimum of three (3) sources is required in order for you to provide a good narrative on the subject.  The additional sources can be website or other media articles outside of the textbook.  The textbook material should be referenced, but you will not count toward the three (3) required sources.
  4. Must write a minimum 1500 word essay that answers the following questions:
    1. Based on the article you chose, how is social inequality described? How does it relate to the forms of stratification discussed in the book?
    2. According to the article, what are the consequences of the social inequality for the people experiencing it? How does it impact their life outcomes or opportunities?
    3. How can the form of social inequality be addressed so we can move towards a more fair and just society?

Guidelines

  • Your essay must:
    • be a total of 1500 words or more
      • The 1500 word limit DOES NOT include names, titles, and references.
      • It also does not include meaningless filler statements.
      • If the paper is less than 1500 words, it will not be read/graded.
    • include factual information from the textbook and/or appropriate articles and websites.
    • be original work.  It will be checked for plagiarism via TurnItIn.
      • You will receive a zero if substantial portions of your work are taken from other sources without proper citation
    • have references and citations for your sources, including the textbook; a minimum of 3 sources required outside the textbook.
    • Essays are automatically submitted to TurnItIn.
      • Any work that TurnItIn identifies as having more than a 10% rate of plagiarism after quoted material and small matches (10 words or less) are excluded will not be read and will receive a grade of F (No points).
      • TurnItIn provides an AI report; if this occurs, the student will be asked for an explanation before the essay is read/graded.
      • All essays must be written using Microsoft Office applications such as Word. Work that is not submitted through the assigned drop box or that is submitted using software that is not compatible with TurnItIn.  (TurnItIn accepts files in .doc, .docx, .docm, .ppt, .pptx, .odt, .txt, .rtf, .pdf, and .html file formats only) will not be read and will receive a grade of zero.
      • If you are using a Mac, do not send a file with the .pages extension; it cannot be opened.  You must save it as a Word file.
      • Submitting a paper that was already submitted by the student to another professor and/or course is also considered an act of academic dishonesty. Students who are found doing this will also receive an F (no points) for this assignment. Students must write a different new essay or paper for every class they take.

    • Essays must be submitted through the proper drop box. Essays that are not submitted through the assigned drop box will not be accepted.

    • No essays will be accepted after the due date.

    • View the grading rubric indicating the elements of the essay and points assigned to each.
