Select a live-action (not animated) feature-length film and analyze its use of
cinematic elements to derive the film’s central idea(s) or theme(s). Discuss
the film’s use of form, mise-en-scene, cinematography, sound design and
editing to articulate your understanding of the film and the overall style of
direction.
-
– This must be a formal essay. Develop a thesis and support your
argument with specific evidence.
-
– Identify the film’s themes and layers of meaning, analyze the
techniques in relation to those themes and meanings.
-
– In developing your thesis, you should be as specific as possible. It is
not enough to say “…the cinematography reveals the central theme
of the film.” What techniques of cinematography reveal this? Is it the
aspect ratio? Is it the choice of lenses? Or the depth of field? Be
specific.
-
– Quote directly from the outside sources and from the film itself. Any
accredited citation format is acceptable. Include a bibliography.
You must include at least three (3) cited academic sources (primary or
peer-reviewed secondary) in your analysis, you may use assigned class
texts as two of these sources. Feel free to include screenshots from the film
to illustrate your points. -
