Research Paper

MLA is the required document style for all essays submitted in this course.
The completed essay (final draft) will contain seven to ten (7-10) pages (excluding the outline with the thesis statement and works cited pages).
The paper will contain a minimum of 7-8 sources, including a variety of sources and limiting Internet sources to two with the exception of databases.
An annotated bibliography will be submitted for this paper.
An annotated bibliography with 10-12 resources should be turned in before the research paper is written. This shows the instructor that your sources are valid, academic resources and that you are getting the necessary publication information from your sources. The paper itself should include a works cited page in MLA format, not a bibliography.
All papers should be submitted using SafeAssign.
Direct quotations will comprise no more than 15% of the paper while paraphrases and summaries may constitute substantially more of the paper.  It is understood that the paper will contain a substantial amount of paraphrased material with parenthetical documentation.
An early draft of the research paper must be submitted before the final draft.

Research Paper Objectives

Devise a research topic, using a variety of sources.
Develop the correct MLA format for noting reference materials.
Employ direct quotes, paraphrases, and summaries from sources for notes.
Compose a research paper with a well-formulated thesis and proper documentation.

Proposed Research Paper Topic

This assignment requires more than a simple sentence stating what you are writing for your research paper. Ensure to write a brief description of your planned topic for your research paper about your novel.
Select the following link to view an Example of a Proposed Research Paper Topic so you will have an idea of what is required for this assignment.

Outline for Research Paper

In a correctly headed (MLA formatted) word document, write an alphanumeric outline for your research paper about your novel. The outline allows you to put your ideas for your research paper.
The outline should be developed at least as far as the capital letter level (major sub-topics). You may, after this assignment and before the final draft of the term paper, decide to change your organization, add information, delete information, and make other changes. This outline is simply a working document intended to demonstrate that you are not attempting to do the entirety of a major assignment the day before it is due.

Annotated Bibliography for Research Paper

Submit the Annotated Bibliography Assignment. Do not forget to add a brief statement (usually no more than 200 words) to each source, describing that particular source and stating how that source is relevant to your critical paper.

Rough Draft of Research Paper

In a correctly headed (MLA formatted) word document, write a complete draft for your research paper about your novel.
This draft will be reviewed to ensure that you have a complete, developed thesis and give sufficient evidence to support all your claims. Some attention will be given to ensure that the tone of your essay is suitably formal for an academic audience, and if there are frequent major grammatical issues, your instructor may advise you about those errors.
This draft will not be scored with the same requirements that the term paper will be. You will still be expected to revise this draft and to review your final draft for grammar and style before you submit it.

Research Paper

Research papers will have a body of seven to ten (7-10) pages. The paper must also have an outline, and Works Cited page. (These pages are NOT considered as part of the body page count.) You will find a sample research paper, including a sample Works Cited page at the Purdue OWL website. Their website also offers information about outlining; be sure to view the three subsections regarding outlining. The order of pages in the paper is the outline, the body of the paper,  then the works cited page. These are all to be saved and sent to me as one document.
The final Works Cited page will contain seven to eight (7-8) sources. Each of the sources used in the Works Cited must be used at least once in the research paper.
Course Hero, LitCharts, Cliffs Notes, SparkNotes, Cram.com, Pink Monkey, Magill’s Surveys, Barron Notes, Schmoop, Masterplots, Monarch Notes, eNotes, Gradesaver, Encyclopedias, Dictionaries, Prezis, essays from paper mills, Wikipedia, and all other similar sources are NOT appropriate.
You are to follow the MLA 8th edition format and documentation as described at the Purdue OWL site.
Use direct quotations sparingly (no more than 25% of the paper).
Be sure the topic is sufficiently limited.
All words should be spelled correctly and errors in sentence structure eliminated.
The level of diction should be formal (no slang, contractions, jargon, or technical terms without definition).
The paper should be well written and scholarly.
All borrowed information must be noted whether quoted or paraphrased.
