Analysis of the opinion piece by Alison Gopnik ‘Screen Bee: Is Screen Time Dangerous for Children?’

For this task, you are required to analyse Alison Gopnik ‘Screen Bee: Is Screen Time Dangerous for Children?’.

 You must analyse the following:

·      language features,

·      structure of the overall text,

·      claims of the text, and

·      isolate those features that would need to be changed if the document were to be written as a position piece.

This assignment focuses on analysis, so we do not want to see simply a summary of the opinion piece.

To support your argument, you must use the articles by Allen (2012) and Hay et al (2012). Also, see the chapter on opinions, position and bias in Brick, Herke and Wong (main textbook) for details on the difference between position and opinion.

Any sources referred to in the text must be properly referenced using the Harvard system and placed in a reference list.

Checklist:

·       Put the title of the position piece at the top and your name underneath the title;

·       1.5 spacing between the lines;

·       Arial or Times New Roman font, minimum 12 size;

·       Ensure you have both in-text references and end-of-text reference in Harvard style;

·       No personal pronouns eg. I/my in your work;

·       Use reporting verbs to incorporate other people’s ideas;

·       Observe academic style (clarity, nominalisation, formal vocab);

·       Check the word count – no more than 1000 words in total not including references.

Please include 2 other references other than the 2 articles mentioned above.
