This module will provide an introduction to policy and politics in nursing, providing a historical perspective from which to support nursings’ political advocacy in health care. The potential role that nurses can effectuate within the “Framework for Action” as it relates to politics and health care as discussed in Mason et al. (2020) will be identified. Additionally, this module will help to define ourselves and our work in relationship to individuals and populations, discussing nursing values and realms of caring, incorporated in the Nursing Code of Ethics as it relates to the ethical obligation of the profession and the quality of nursing as a practice.
At the end of this module students will be able to:
- Identify what is included in the framework of policy and politics. (SLO 2)
- Identify historical perspectives of health care and how they shape health care/policy making. (SLO 1)
- Describe aspects of nursing advocacy as they relate to health care/nursing practice. (SLO 2, 4)
- Discuss determinants of health, environment and nursing role in relationship to population health. (SLO 2 ,3)
