Purpose
Historians often have little to work with when attempting to analyze history. We cannot interview the players involved, and instead must make do with the evidence that chance has preserved. In order to get at the information they want, the historian therefore often finds it necessary to ‘read between the lines’, all while armed with the knowledge of historical context to guide them through.
These short assignments are designed to help guide you through the documents collected in The Trial of Tempel Anneke and prepare you for writing the final paper for this course.
Instructions
You must have read at least up to Supplementary Record 1 in The Trial of Tempel Anneke (including the introduction).
Answer the following questions:
- Being a folk healer could raise suspicion, but statistics show that the majority of convicted witches during the European witch-hunt were not folk healers. Tempel Anneke was one herself. Discuss the ways in which her practice of being a healer impacted her case and treatment by the court authorities.
- How did the use of torture change Tempel Anneke’s trial? How did her answers change? Did the focus of the court’s questions change? How did torture impact the court’s belief in her guilt? Discuss any other changes that you might see.
- How does the court view torture and the evidence extracted from it? Do you think there were any doubts about it’s effectiveness and the truthfulness of the answers? Are there any rules regulating its use that you see evidence of?
Your responses must be at least 750 words long, double-spaced, 12 point Times New Roman font, 1″ margins.
This is not a formal essay. You do not need an introduction or a conclusion paragraph. You do need full sentences and a paragraph format. Simply answer the question in a logical, coherent, and thorough way. Provide evidence from the text to back up your statements.
All evidence you use from the text must be cited. For short assignments such as these, you may simply give the page number using in-text citations. Example:
-
- Tempel Anneke said that the boy Curdt sprained his leg while jumping across the water (58).
If your copy of the book does not have page numbers, use the folio number for your citation.
