Historic Racial Battles Over Education & Change Over Time AND Settler Projects of Elimination – The School to Prison Pipeline & The New Jim Crow

Focus on one unit at a time (have a conversation with all materials) and then, in the next unit do the same (covering all materials), etc.
• Do not overthink it. We are building towards improving each week so expect feedback even when you do well.
• When you are making your points & using direct examples, multiple authors can be cited for one or multiple things (just mention where you got the information from with in-text citations and page numbers, so the readers know what you are referencing to).
• Try to say: What strikes you? This will vary from student to student. So no, you will not have to talk about everything but the main ideas you should mention and be sure to list the authors, and then expand on that information with your own critical eye.
• At the end, you can pose your questions about what you might not have understood or in general, ask about what might spark thought in you after you have processed the materials.
I hope this is helpful.

To do – Answer Discussion Post & Responses to 2 classmates for this week should be about what they answered in their discussion post. Have a meaningful conversation with one another about what you learned, understood and/or did not understand. Help one another and dialogue.
Instructions: Submit a Discussion Post that includes the following information: a combination of a concise summary regarding the materials you learned from (to begin a very short summary in no more than 5-8 sentences – “saying” what the materials were about) plus an ANALYZATION via a personal & critical reflection on what you watched/read/learned/analyzed this week (all assigned materials), your deep and critical perspective – how you engaged it. The post should describe what the sources were about, including the main ideas (your takeaways) and any supporting examples or evidence. Be sure to make connections between all sources. How were they in conversation with one another? If yes, point that out, if they were not then compare and contrast that information. Then, consider addressing any of the following questions in the reflection section: What resonated with you and why? What connections did you make (personally, etc.)? What did you learn? What questions do you have?
Expected: Be sure to keep your summary short & concise. The majority of your points will be earned on having all assigned materials in one conversation, reflecting (your personal perspective/how you processed the materials/what you think), making strong connections throughout, and integrating your own personal experiences into the entire piece. Tie it all together.
Format: Discussion Post should only be one post (not two). The 500-word minimum should include all of your work (short summary included). In your 500-word minimum submission, you will answer in detail and by using direct text (in-text citations) from the materials assigned what is being asked above (your answers will then create a sort-of mini essay) that is directly typed onto the body of the Discussion Post (just hit reply button below) and if you are inspired to write more then, you may do so. Do not attach files or documents to your written submission. Please use in-text parenthetical citations  (https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/mla_style/mla_formatting_and_style_guide/mla_in_text_citations_the_basics.html)after a paraphrase or a direct quote e.g., (Author last name) or (“Short Title” & page number). Include all works cited  (https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/mla_style/mla_formatting_and_style_guide/mla_works_cited_page_basic_format.html)at the end of the journal listing each source that you consulted. For audio or video journals, simply narrate your sources. For example, you would say, “According to name of author/article/video/podcast/film/media …” Then narrate all sources consulted at the end. For example, “This Discussion Post was based on… name of source and name of source.”
Please be detailed in answering the discussion/prompt/reflection questions. DO NOT answer your entire DISCUSSION POST in quotes & summaries (points will not be earned). Use your own words, thoughts, and ideas. How did you process this information? Also, if you are
practicing Cornell note taking (which is optional) you may use them to guide you and explain your critical thoughts and position. Be sure to answer the prompt in detail, provide examples from the materials, and make personal connections and share them as well.
