A synopsis of the book (characters, plot, settings, relationships, etc.) that is a maximum of five
paragraphs in length.
2. Research the book, its author and the time period it covers. Students must cite their sources within
these paragraphs using MLA or APA citation guidelines. See the guidelines below under #5 for your
source requirements. This component must be a minimum of five paragraphs in length.
3. Students must answer the following questions within their paper:
a) Do you feel the book is or is not an important historical work? Why or why not?
b) Do you feel as if the author was biased towards one view of history and neglected other
interpretations of events? Why or why not?
c) Do you feel the author’s descriptions are accurate? Why or why not?
d) Did the book cause you to change your opinion about historical events? Why or why not?
e) Do you feel the book would make a valid and reliable historical source for the period of history it
deals with? Why or why not?
**When answering the above questions, students must cite specific quotes and
ideas from the book review selection to support their conclusions. Students should
not cite sources from their research in this portion of their paper, only the book
they actually read. Students must also write a full paragraph (four or more
sentences) for each of the above questions.

4. The last paragraph should be the conclusion of the paper where students wrap up their findings. In this
paragraph students should also talk about whether or not they liked the book (love or hate, totally
optional).
5. Students must include a Reference page which adheres to the following guidelines:
a) Minimum of four scholarly sources.
b) Students may not use your textbook or your book review selection as a source.
c) Students may not use dictionaries or general encyclopedias as sources.

The review must also adhere to the following guidelines:
1. Minimum of five full pages in length (page count does not include a cover page or the reference
page).
2. Grammar and spelling will count as part of the final grade.

– Remember, the study of history is not just about war, politics, or specific events. It is also about social and
cultural issues such as the types of clothing people wore, the foods they ate, the types of housing they lived
in, medical care, prejudices, superstitions, how people interacted with each other, the status of women and
minorities as well as a myriad of other issues. When reading your book, be on the lookout for these
components as well and address them in your review.
