please answer each discussion post sepreately. only a one paragraph each . also please answer any questions that is asked.
In addition to your original post, be sure to provide a meaningful response to at least two of your peers’ posts by Friday night at 11:59pm Mountain Time. Read other students’ article summaries and respond to at least two other students’ postings that focused on the health needs of two populations that were different from the one you chose. (Step 1 lists the three populations.) What else do you want to know about the health need? Comment and/or expand on the implications for population-based nursing posed for the other two populations. Give suggestions for enhancing the proposed interventions.Expand on aspects of population-based and community-based nursing as defined by others that are different from or complementary to your own ideas.
Explore the Health Needs of People Who Are Homeless
The population in the United States that I have decided to focus on are people who are homeless. I have located an article that focuses on the decline of physical and mental health of the homeless (Sleet & Francescutti, 2021). In this article they give a scholarly definition of homelessness:
“People without a place to reside;
People in persistent poverty, forced to move constantly, and who are homeless for even brief periods of time;
People who have lost their housing due to personal, social, or environmental circumstances” (Sleet & Francescutti, 2021 para. 2).
The journal article has brought together researchers, practitioners, and community organizers to give voice to the public health issues of homelessness as well as to offer ideas to decrease homelessness and offer quality health care and housing options for this population (Sleet & Francescutti, 2021). In the article they summarized 13 research papers that in the end concluded that basic shelter is a human right and that having sufficient housing is linked to having improved health (Sleet & Francescutti, 2021).
An intervention to improve homelessness that I propose is permanent supportive housing (PSH). PSH is designed to improve and maintain housing stability (Moledina et al., 2021). This is accomplished by housing assistance such as rental assistance to provide community-based housing. This also includes supportive services to keep people out of homelessness (Moledina et al., 2021).
In conclusion, there are several interventions that could be used in conjunction to permanent supportive housing such as intensive case management and mental health support that would ensure a successful transition from homelessness.
Week 4 Discussion: Explore the Health Needs of a Population.
Health problems that affect homeless people.
Homeless people are susceptible to the same level of health issues of those with a home. However, it is worse for them for they have no place to rest. While this is a given thought, the rate of homelessness in America is quite large and there is still no solution to it. According to Johnson Pew HCH (2020) ”Pustular skin lesions secondary to insect bites and other infestations are common among homeless people. In addition, venous stasis of the lower extremities (i.e., poor circulation because of varicose veins) caused by prolonged periods of sitting or sleeping with the legs down predisposes homeless people to dependent edema (swelling of the feet and legs), cellulitis, and skin ulcerations (paragraph 15)”. In addition to skin disorders and blood vessels, homeless people undergo very traumatic experiences that can lead to mental illnesses. In this article it is exposed that homeless people are exposed to various levels of assault including violent crimes, rape and assaulted robbery. It is imperative to bring awareness to this issue and help next time a homeless person is on the street asking for help or food.
Mental Disorders.
Adults who are homeless frequently have severe and persistent mental illnesses. Due to the stigma associated with mental illness, a stereotype of all homeless persons with mental illness has emerged in recent years, replacing the earlier stereotype of the homeless drinker. An clear example is the description provided by two bystanders to the writers of the article described the Bowery in New York as a “psychiatric dumping ground,” it was one of the earliest reports revealing the high frequency of mental illness among the homeless. They claimed that a significant number of psychiatric patients were leaving mental hospitals and ending up on the streets, a claim that has since been extensively repeated in the media and academic research.
