Purpose: The purpose of this week’s assignment is to acquire fundamental chronological and geographical knowledge, including the main events and developments, of the First World War.

Create an annotated timeline of the First World War following the guidelines and instructions provided below and using PowerPoint, Google Slides, or Prezi.

To annotate means to list and explain.

An annotated timeline is a listing of events in timeline form that includes:

  • Historical events.
  • The date the historical event occurred.
  • An explanation or brief summary detailing the significance of the historical event.

Review the “Interactive WWI TimelineLinks to an external site.” on the website of the National WWI Museum and Memorial (Kansas City, MO), and identify events and dates that you want to include in your own annotated timeline. The Museum’s timeline can be your only source for this assignment, or it can complement the material included in this week’s module.

Identify and collect the images that you want to display in your annotated timeline. You can use the internet or the material provided in this week’s module. Make sure to take note of your sources.

  • Typical timeline entry would include “date, name/title of event, annotation” (example: “June 28, 1914 / Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand / Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, and his wife Sophie, were killed by Bosnian Serb nationalist Gavrilo Princip in Sarajevo.)

Guidelines:

Your annotated timeline should consist of at least twenty (20) events, including:

  • The official beginning date of World War I
  • The Germans’ first use of poison gas as a weapon
  • The Lusitania incident
  • The United States’ declaration of war on Germany
  • Lenin’s arrival in Petrograd, Russia
  • The Balfour Declaration
  • The Bolshevik Revolution
  • Woodrow Wilson’s “14 Points”
  • The Treaty of Brest-Litovsk
  • The official ending date of World War I
  • Germany’s ratification of the Treaty of Versailles
  • The 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution

Include one image for each historical event of your annotated timeline.

Images should have a succinct description and credit lines according to APA guidelines.
