Topic: Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid use disorders
Health policies affect all aspects of nursing practice (National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties [NONPF, 2022). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) describes policy as “a law, regulation, procedure, administrative action, incentive, or voluntary practice of governments and other institutions” (CDC, 2015, para. 1). It is important for nurses to understand health policy processes and issues that are affected by health policy such as “racism and health, affordable health care, health care spending, health care access and use, health equity, determinants of health, pharmaceuticals, medical technology, environmental health, global health, and quality of care (NONPF, 2022, p. 10).
