      • “What is the speaker saying?”
        Start by clearly outlining what the speaker in the primary text is saying.  What are the speaker’s main points and evidence?   What are some quotes that will help you explain this?

      • “Do I think the speaker is correct or incorrect?”
        “What is my argument?”
        If “correct”: what evidence and arguments from the text support and prove the speaker’s point?  What arguments can I make to support that the speaker is correct? 
        If “incorrect”: what evidence and arguments of from the text are mistaken?  What arguments and evidence can I use to show the speaker’s point is wrong?

      • What are the strongest objections to my arguments?  How can I reply?
        Imagine you are a debate and someone is going to disagree with your main argument.  What will they say as an objection?  How can you reply and show that your main argument is true after all?

    • Essay Structure :- As a rough guideline, I recommend you use this five-paragraph structure… 

      • Paragraph 1: Thesis. Give a clear, one-sentence description of your thesis, your main point. Very briefly summarize your interpretation, arguments, objection, reply, and conclusion.
      • Paragraph 2: Interpretation. Summarize the section of the primary source you will be discussing and give the speaker’s main points.  Use proper citation format.  Explain what the speaker is saying in your own words.  
      • Paragraph 3: Arguments, Evidence. Agree or disagree with the primary source.  Clearly state what is correct or incorrect, useful or not, about the point the primary source has made. Then, provide evidence for why your determination is correct.  Your evidence should be an argument that applies to everyone’s experience.  State the facts.  
      • Paragraph 4: Objection and Reply. Try and raise one good objection to your own thesis. Then give your reply and save your thesis.  Use clear arguments and evidence.  
      • Paragraph 5: Conclusion. Re-state your thesis and its strongest supporting argument. If possible, add your own insight into how this conclusion improves our understanding, and helps us to lead better lives.

    • Grading:- In this class, a mini-essay will be graded on the following criteria… 

      1.  Thesis: Take a clear position on what the speaker is saying and whether it correct or incorrect 
      2.  Interpretation: Use quotes and citation and show that you clearly understand the point the speaker is making. 
      3.  Arguments and Evidence: Use arguments to show that your thesis is accurate.  Present evidence from the text that supports your view.  
      4. Objections and Replies: Raise an objection to your main argument, make a reply.

        Format:         Proper format, spelling, citation, and clarity of writing style. 
        Independent Thinking: Don’t parrot the arguments of others, present your own point of view.

      Nietzsche disagrees that good should be defined as “unegoistic” (Nietzsche, 2)

      To cite a quote or idea, simply look at the section number to see where the quote is found.
