The effect of early active mobilization on long-term physical function in former intensive care patients – a systematic overview

The effect of early active mobilization on long-term physical function in former intensive care patients
  • The articles used in the essay have to be quantitative studies about long term outcome of early moblization done in the icu, and  how it effects physical function measured after discharge of the icu, 3 months or more after the discharge. It can be buy telephone or physical measures.
  • The essay is a master and it has to be systematisk review, with introduction, method, results, discussion and conclusion.
Purpose: To examine the effect of early active mobilization on long-term physical function in former intensive care patients.

physical function domain of post intensive care syndrome/intensive care unit acquired weakness, measured after hospital discharge

Results: The sources are should be seen together and compared, what is similar and differences: – the measurement tools, did they use the same or not, how will that effect the outcome.
– was the intervention done the same, was it initiated at the same time. Some articles write that they initiated it within 48 hours and others within a week,
– did the patients have the same starting point at the start of the intervention, were they equally ill, approximately the same age. 2 of the articles showing a significant difference had with self-breathing patients…
-Only measurment done after hospital discharge (muscle status, ADL, strength.)
-confidence interval needs be mentioned for  all the articles- have the articles taken this into account, are their results trustworthy.
 -reliability and validity, bias

Discussion:

All included studies mention 4 factors that are fundamental to increased functional status, 1 activity level (how often and how much they were mobilized), 2 how early activity was initiated, 3. level of sedation and how sick the patients were during admission to the intensive care unit.. Self-breathing patients-> less sedation. 4. measurement tools. lost to follow-up – how it affects the result.

-reliability, validity, bias, generalizability of the results.
– limitations, strength and suggestions for future research
