Jonathan Storm is a recently retired 65-year-old male fire fighter. He retired after an incident where he obtained 3rd degree burns to his back and arms and required skin grafts. The damage to his skin has resulted in anhidrosis.
- Can I live without sweat glands? Explain why/why not by discussing the physiology of the sweat glands (and what functions are compromised if without). (8 marks)
- Discuss the effect of Jonathan’s age on the efficacy of his healing. (4 marks)
- While Jonathan was in hospital, his burn wound got infected. Johnathan’s Staphylococcus aureusinfection was the result of an opportunistic infection. Explain what this means and state the most likely mode of transmission of the bacteria in the present scenario. (4 marks)

Although we are asking you to discuss a ‘without’ situation, do not become distracted by detailed pathophysiology and clinical signs, symptoms and treatments
