In your opinion, what was the defining idea or characteristic of the French Revolution?

Reference or respond to (1) of the following sources:

*You do not have to agree with the source, but you must briefly discuss/engage with it.

Directions:

Answer the prompt in a minimum of (3) 5-sentence paragraphs.

Use and cite at least (1) primary sources. In addition, you must include a reference to the textbook chapter, too. As a result, you should have a total of two citations/sources in your main post.

To receive full credit you must directly/explicitly reference the sources. You can do this through reference “Ida B. Wells wrote that “….” or through parenthetical citation at the end of a quote or a reference to the work. You do not need to formally cite sources in Chicago/MLA/APA in discussion posts.

It is important that you engage the sources you reference, rather than just sticking them into a general response to the prompt. Show that you have put thought into your post and your use of the sources.

Posts that do not adequately reference (1) primary source and reference the textbook will not receive a grade higher than a ‘D’.

In addition to engaging (1) primary source and referencing the textbook, you must include at least (3) concrete specific examples (from the sources or from the textbook). Concrete specific examples are defined as the names of people, places, things, ideas, or events.

Use proper grammar and conventions of writing. Posts that are full of grammar issues and other errors will receive a lower grade. I recommend writing your post in MSWORD, using spell check, proofreading, and then posting it into D2L.

Keep your posts civil and respectful towards your fellow classmates.

Remember, minimum responses generally earn an average grade of a ‘C’. Good or great responses go well-beyond minimum requirements and show careful thought and consideration.

Response Directions:

After you have written your initial post, respond to (1) of your classmates’ post. Importantly, make sure to add something *NEW* to the discussion. Posts that are simply vague, general, or congratulatory will receive a ‘F’.

Your response post should be a minimum of 5 sentences.

Your response should include at least (1) specific example.

Your response must reference either a primary source or the textbook for full credit.

Your response should be civil and friendly.

A Note About Sources

Remember that you must use (1) primary source from the source links found in each unit module.

Primary sources are extremely important to the study of history. They are documents that were produced at the time of an event by people who experienced the event or written afterwards by people who lived during the time. For example, the above document, The Declaration of Independence, written in 1776, is a primary source document relevant to the American Revolution. Another example would be the diary of a sailor who survived the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941. Primary sources can take the form of written sources like newspapers, diaries, letters, or journal articles, or multimedia sources like audio, video, or pictures. A picture of the aftermath of the bombing at Pearl Harbor would also be a primary source. A recording of Irving Berlin’s popular 1926 song “Blue Skies” would also be a primary source relevant to the hope and prosperity of the 1920s.

Secondary sources are works produced after an event by people who did not experience the event. Secondary sources are often generated by people who have read and reviewed many primary sources as well as other secondary sources. A great example of a secondary source in this course is your textbook.
