A) Discussion Responses

Source Requirement: Each answer should be supported by at least one source from the course in the form of a short, direct quote, a paraphrased passage, or a summary of a key point.  You are free to use any of the course materials to meet this requirement, including the lectures, The American Yawp, the primary sources in The American Yawp that can be found at the end of each chapter, and other materials, such articles, documentaries, and so on.  You should draw on a variety of sources in the aggregate for the week.

Please cite your source in parenthesis after the sentence in which you use it.

A) Discussion Responses

Please respond to each prompt (roughly 150 words for each will do):

A1) What does William Byrd’s diary and Richard Frethorne’s Letter tells us about servitude and slavery?  You will have leeway in answering this question, and might consider the conditions that servants and slaves lived in, the manner in which slavery corrupts the slaveowner and his family, how slave owners attempted to maintain order, the larger impact of slavery on southern society, and so on.  As you can see, there are a lot of different ways to approach the diary.  You must cite both sources.

A2) Compare and contrast the Spanish and French empires in the Americas.

A3) Compare and contrast two or three of the British colonies.

A4) What factors help explain why each of the European powers interacted with the Native Americans in a different way?
