Question #1 Does the health care organization have an ethical obligation to care for the patient, the employee, or both? Please defend your answer by citing at least one reference to the ANA code of ethics. (350 words)

Healthcare organizations have an ethical obligation to care for both patients and employees. The American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics for Nurses provides guidance on this matter. For example atient Care: The ANA Code of Ethics emphasizes the primary duty of nurses to their patients. Provision 1.1 of the code states, “The nurse practices with compassion and respect for the inherent dignity, worth, and unique attributes of every person.” This provision makes it clear that the patient’s well-being, dignity, and unique needs should always be a nurse’s top priority. Healthcare organizations, by extension, share this ethical obligation to prioritize patient care as a fundamental part of their mission. Or another example would be employee Care: The ANA Code of Ethics also acknowledges the importance of nurses’ self-care and their obligation to maintain their own health and well-being. Provision 5.1 of the code states, “The nurse owes the same duties to self as to others, including the responsibility to promote health and safety, preserve wholeness of character and integrity, maintain competence, and continue personal and professional growth.” This provision recognizes that healthcare professionals, including nurses, should receive support from their organizations to ensure they can provide the best possible care to patients. The ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses underscores the ethical obligation of healthcare organizations to care for both patients and employees. Patient care is a primary duty, but the well-being and professional development of healthcare providers are also important ethical considerations. Balancing these obligations is essential for the overall success and ethical integrity of healthcare organizations.
