The Consequences of Plagiarism Behaviors in a Nursing Master’s Program and in the Nursing Practice

The nursing course is among those that would require the student to engage in practice after course completion. This means that it is important for them to have the knowledge of what they will be practicing. Some students do not take a keen interest in their education, and this is a problem, especially if it is a master’s course that requires the student to undertake research and improve their skills and knowledge in specific fields (Fadlalmola et al., 2022). Students who engage in Plagiarism face the consequence of not being able to gain the necessary knowledge and skills to perform their duties.

The nursing profession involves providing medical care to patients, and this cannot be done by a person who does not have the needed knowledge and skills. It is important for patients to be given high-quality care, but that will not happen if the student who becomes a nurse plagiarizes their academic work (Kratovil, 2021). Plagiarism involves copying another researcher’s work and putting it as one’s own work without doing research. A person who plagiarizes another scholar’s work will not get the experience and skills needed for them to do their nursing duties.

Acquiring knowledge in nursing happens largely through undertaking research, and students taking a master’s course must come up with a research proposal and undertake research as part of their education. If they do not do the research well but engage in Plagiarism, then they will not benefit from the course, and that will be seen in practice(Alnajjar et al., 2021). Plagiarism takes place during the research process when a student does shoddy work and uses other writer’s works. When this happens in nursing, the student would not realize their potential in terms of the ability to undertake research and provide solutions to various healthcare problems. Nurses and other healthcare professionals have the duty of continually engaging in research as a strategy to learn more and gain new skills to provide care. This will not happen if the student engages in Plagiarism because they will not learn and experience the art of nursing through research.

An example of Plagiarism by the master’s students is copying large pieces of text from a certain source but failing to cite that source. Some students engage in this practice without noting that they are plagiarizing another researcher’s paper. This form of Plagiarism makes the student present the paper as theirs, and this is dishonesty that is not good for the student because nursing requires true knowledge and skills (Ewing et al., 2019). The consequence of engaging in the stated example of Plagiarism is that the student will not be prepared to undertake their duties of providing medical care.
