The availability of relevant quality secondary data can present many opportunities for researchers. And while the decision to use secondary data does not fundamentally change the tenets of sound research, it does need to be addressed in the research approach. Research must be designed with this choice in mind, including the development of appropriate research questions.
In this Assignment, you will develop a research question based on a selected secondary dataset. You will also identify appropriate variables and research design approaches based on the dataset selected.
TO PREPARE
- Select a dataset file from those provided in the Learning Resources or choose a publicly available public health dataset from the links provided in this week’s Learning Resources.
- Choose a research topic that you would like to explore using the selected dataset. Be sure to choose a topic that is appropriate for the dataset and that can be clearly understood and analyzed.
- Develop a research question related to the research topic and dataset you chose.
- Identify the variables and the research design and methods you would use based on the research question you developed.
Submit the following:
- Develop a research question for the research topic and dataset you selected (Dataset is Diabetes_BRFSS3).
- Describe one independent, one dependent, and one control variable (if applicable) to be used in the proposed study, as well as the population under study.
- Explain and justify the use of the selected dataset (codebook and screenshot of dataset is attached).
- Propose a research design and method. Justify the research design and method based on the research question you developed and this week’s Learning Resources.
- Identify variables and any potential need for recoding or combining variables.
- Explain what measure(s) of association are needed to quantify the relationship between the independent and dependent variable.
- NOTE: This does not include the statistical design/data analysis plan.
- NOTE: There is no need to perform the variable transformation in this assignment.
