Walter Pater believes, when we see an object as it really is, know our impressions,
discriminate, and realize distinguishing features, we engage in the act of critical analysis.
“To analyze” means to break down into parts. “To criticize” means to evaluate, review,
or determine the worth or value of something. The analysis, therefore, breaks down a

Jonathan Swift’s essay “A Modest Proposal” highlights the economic discrepancy and

the economic discrepancy prevalent in Ireland. This piece of literature is unique as it
presents an amalgamation of an essay and a fictional piece of writing.
For the purpose of this assignment, students will critically analyze the subject of the
essay by evaluating the ethos of the speaker, and the structure (organization) and the
implications of the language in Jonathan Swift’s “A Modest Proposal.”
As students evaluate the structure of the essay, they will consider how the speaker
presents his ideas to the reader. Additionally, students will evaluate the implications of
the language proposed in the essay and determine Swift’s implicit argument and address
the moral conclusion that the audience may derive.
Your essay will present a tiered evaluation. Your task, then, will be to
A) provide a detailed analysis of the work in relation to the speaker’s ethos and
demonstration of logos (organization).
B) evaluate the implications of language as signifying a dehumanized and distorted
portrayal of the poor
C) argue the manner in which Jonathan Swift’s essay depicts the moral conclusion
the audience may derive.
The first essay consists of seven (7) paragraphs: an introduction, five (5) body
paragraphs, and a conclusion.
Introduction:
The introduction (at least for the first essay) should consist of 5-7sentences. Remember,

paragraphs; rather its purpose is to demonstrate that in consideration of the evidence, the
argument posed in the thesis is justified.
