Visit the American Wing at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the American Art exhibition on the 5th floor of The Brooklyn Museum. Look closely at how each exhibition is selected, presented and installed. Read the wall labels and interpretive panels. What language does each museum use to define American art and material culture? Compare the missions of these institutions and discuss how each organization’s mission is apparent in the presentation of American art in these exhibitions. Be sure to visit the Luce Center at both the Met and Brooklyn. Write a 3 – 5 page paper (double spaced), which compares and contrasts how these museums present American art within the context of each museum’s mission and identity.
How is the subject matter similar, dissimilar? What are the goals of each of these presentations? How does the selected content and presentation of the art in each exhibition work in terms of reaching audience? What audiences are being targeted? What supplementary/educational materials are available and are they successful? Are you aware of how these exhibitions are funded? What kind of technology is used in relation to each exhibition (social media, interactive panels, video, etc.)? For the Met and Brooklyn, how accessible are the storage areas to the public…for doing research?
