General Guidelines for News Article
- Must have a title and below that, a subtitle sentence in italics that briefly describes the content of the article.
- Use Oxford comma
- Use short paragraphs with subheadings.
- It must have headings: Use title case for headings and subheadings.
- Cite all sources in line, with a link directly within the copy, including a list at the end for further reading (i.e. hyperlink in addition to reference list at end of article)
- Include block quotes of expert related to topic/paragraph (minimum two quotes from experts).
- Must be 1,000 to 1,500 words, single spaced.
- Use block paragraph formatting (do not indent). Put extra line spaces before and after headings, and between sections.
- Include a link to sources within the text and at the end of the article for further reading
- Include a minimum of one photo to include with the news article. Make sure you use royalty-free photos: https://unsplash.com/Links to an external site.
Note: You can select different News Article templates that are on Word. To select a Word template, open up a new Word document, and then select “Open New from Template,” and then search for newspaper or news article. You can add your article text and then delete the rest. Here are a few examples that I found:
