Purpose:  To focus on a problem such as illiteracy, bullying, domestic violence, obesity, and other social issues of contemporary public resonance, and to consider ways to define this problem.

Skills: Definition essays are a type of exposition essay that defines a term or idea. These essays typically examine complex or abstract topics and provide in-depth analysis and explanations. For instance, a definition essay might discuss what existentialism is or the meaning of quantum physics. Definition essays are common in academic and research settings.

Identify:

1.PUBLIC RESONANCE

Who should care about this issue?  Why?

What particular community, place, or group does this issue effect?

How might reader(s) be involved in this issue?

Why is it important that others hear your opinion about this issue?

2. PROBLEM

a)What are the causes of the problem?

b)What are the most troubling or alarming images associated with the problem?

c)What are its short-term effects? 

d)What are long-term effects?

e)What other situation (event, attitude) does this problem resemble? 

f)Has history repeated itself?

      Key Elements:

      Problem:

        6. In-text citation

      4. Include a works cited page with a minimum of 3 sources (No WIKIPEDIA, and sources must be published after 2020)

      Additional important required details to point out:

      1. Each body paragraph MUST have at least one direct quote
      2. Quotes (attention grabbers) are allowed in the introduction (if signaled properly)
      3. Quotes are NOT allowed in the conclusion
      4. Quotes are not allowed as first or last sentence of paragraphs
      5. Avoid using “I” and other personal pronouns— “I think”, “I feel”, “I believe”, “In my opinion”
      6. Avoid any personal anecdotes and any other forms of personal narratives or experiences
      7. Start by researching facts, statistics, dates, and any other pertinent information regarding this problem.
      8. Define the problem.
      9. Must have a solid definition or explanation of the problem to start with.
      10. For example, if I saw students’ success in freshman composition courses as a problem, I might decide to propose solutions by considering what they are having the most issues with.
      11. Once you have selected a problem, and researched the facts and other information about it, consider the time frame for which you are analyzing the context of your topic.  Additionally, your synthesis should revolve around important details for your audience along with informative details.
      12. Your paper must point out and attempt to reveal particular layers of your topic.
