The Athenian envoy speech in paragraph 1.73 – 1.78 from The Landmark Thucydides (Free Press, 1996)

  • Your paper should be about 5-6 pages (1500 words) double-spaced, in black, 12- point Times New Roman font, with one inch margins. Indicate the word tally on the cover of the paper. Only paper submissions are accepted. No electronic submissions.

  • The paper should be a discussion of the question given by the instructor. It should contain a “thesis statement” (about two or three lines maximum) in which you indicate the position you will be developing in the paper. The bulk of the paper should then contain a discussion of your thesis, i.e., how you answer the question.

  • Specifically, your paper should contain the following: (1) a specific and identifiable thesis statement; (2) a coherent and consistent argument that does not merely repeat class lectures but reveals independent thinking and proves your thesis; (3) concrete evidence from the text in support of your argument, with reference (in brackets); (4) proper formal written style (i.e. no spelling/grammar mistakes, no informal language, etc.)

  • Papers must quote from the primary sources used in class. Papers without quotations from the primary sources (with precise page references) will receive a failing grade.

  • Your paper will be graded on how well you discuss your thesis and the quality of your argument. Proper formal written style is important as well and is taken into account.
