Motivation and Achievement in Childhood

Learning Goal: I’m working on a psychology discussion question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.

Motivation and learning begin as early as infancy. We are driven to get results based on what behaviors seem to achieve the best outcome. In childhood, we see the drive for motivation emerging in many areas. Children want to please the important adults in their lives. They also want to do things for themselves, such as learning to dress themselves, writing their name and many other things to foster independence and a feeling of achievement. There are many factors that contribute to whether a child maintains that motivation.

Read pages 367-373 in your text and conduct your own research to answer the following questions.

*What is one theory of motivation?
*How might early childhood learning disorders affect motivation and achievement?
*What tools or techniques are positively correlated to enhanced motivation and achievement in early childhood?

peer 1Dr. Rason and fellow students, as a parent of three it is important to understand not all things will motivate the same child. My oldest was motivated by what would make me happy, the typical firstborn. My middle child was motivated by freedom. Time-out for him was an easy way to motivate him not to behave poorly. My daughter is motivated by shopping. It does not matter where, thrift shops, dollar tree, or Nordstrom’s. It’s the experience of spending quality time with someone that motivates her. This is important to know as her parent because her medical issues affect her mental health I must be cognitive of this so that she will not fall into a deep depression. There are two types of motivation. Extrinsic and intrinsic. Extrinsic is motivated by the person receiving a reaction or a physical trophy to obtain praise from people. Intrinsic motivation is self-motivated. (Cherry 2022) I am personally more motivated by an intrinsic system. I will do things that people feel are beyond my reach. This is not to obtain praise from them but for my satisfaction. Theories of motivation include Instinct, drives and needs, and arousal. Instincts can be biological. This can be important for an organism’s survival such as fear, cleanliness, and love. The drive reduction theory of motivation is when there is a biological drive to which our behaviors are motivated by the need to fulfill these drives. Arousal theories of motivation can be as simple as sitting at the beach or as crazy as cliff diving, but motivation is a sensation within your body that you find comfort or thrill in. (Cherry 2022) I have ADD and is told I am on the spectrum of autism. My motivations are far different than others. After all, my motivations are more basic because I will lean towards the logical or rational. For example, I am motivated by my love language, time. It is hard for me to be gracious when someone makes overt gestures with gifts when you could have spent 20$ on take-out and watched a movie at home with me. This is also due to my father’s love bombing me with gifts but the core of all of it is motivation. Time motivates me. So yes, childhood learning disorders do affect motivation. Achievement to some might not mean the same to others. For me, achieving a great relationship with your children and living by example are paramount to success as a parent. To others, it’s money and status. My logical way of thinking suggests that it is rare to find a person who has status and is also happy, so why is that your motivating factor in life? Healthy relationships with others whether family or friends seems to be where most people find happiness, so why not cultivate that over all other things? Children are motivated by the same motivations so the technique some educators will use is, reward systems. Whether it is candy, stickers, or trophies, the teachers will use these elements to motivate their students. This will also allow for lifetime motivation for success if the person is intrinsically minded (American Psychological Association) WC520

COLLAPSE

Motivation is the desire to move toward a desired end state. We are prompted to act or think about something due to either an incentive or a goal. An internal disposition pushes an individual toward such a goal or end state. A goal is a cognitive representation of an individual’s desire to achieve a certain outcome. Some of the theories that have been presented in the field of motivation include those by Maslow, Herzberg, and Alderfer. These focus on the various factors that influence people’s motivation. According to Maslow, motivation is triggered by the satisfaction of one’s needs, which is usually arranged in a hierarchical manner. However, dissatisfaction can lead to people’s desire to attain fulfillment. The incremental theory states that the brain is similar to a muscle that can grow and change as it is exercised. This concept is referred to as growth mindset, and it refers to the idea that increasing the amount of exercise and stimulation that the brain receives can help improve its intelligence. A learning disability can affect a child’s motivation. It can be hard to maintain motivation due to their frequent failures. It’s also challenging to keep up with adult expectations, as they are not always able to meet them. Learning helplessness can also develop in children with learning disabilities. They become disinterested and passive once they accept that they can’t help themselves. It is important that parents start addressing the issue of motivation and achievement in their children. Having a positive childhood atmosphere can help motivate children to follow their goals and work hard. In addition to being able to provide a supportive environment, it is also important that parents know how to approach their children’s behavior. As a parent, it is also important to provide the necessary resources and activities to help the children reach their goals and improve their motivation. In addition, teachers can help students develop self-regulation and achievement by providing them with the necessary support and encouragement.
