Discussion questions March

Learning Goal: I’m working on a social science multi-part question and need the explanation and answer to help me learn.

500 words. You can reply to classmates if you like.

Understand this is a snippet of the full religious experience of African Americans, it is rich and wide and deep. It is congregational and personal. This is no way encompasses all of that.

Use the below list or choose one of the Alternative religions in the final lesson in the module.

Discuss the foundation, founder/s, time frame, reason for founding (why a new congregation), beliefs, how they are different from other groups.

Why did you choose this tradition? What did you find that would be important to share with others in class or to add to the lesson?

You can choose an African American Christian denomination or African American Abrahamc tradition, African American Pagan tradition, Santeria, Voodoo, any that are discussed.

At least 300 words, up to 10 points available.

I do NOT want synopsis of the movie or show. I’ve usually seen them.

I AM looking for how the movie/show relates to class. Give me specific events, terms, ideas, beliefs that relate directly to class, with examples and discussion. Tell me how the class helped you better understand what you were watching, and how what you were watching helped you better understand the class. Be sure to discuss the religous elements, especially how they impact the society and worldview.

Below is a list of suggestions. I am also open to new things, please email first.

Be wary of fiction unless listed. Email me if you have one you want me to consider.

Crash Course Videos (Do 3 episodes)

Religions of the World (AppleTV)

The Story of God (Do 2 episodes)

Planet Egypt Series (Do 2 episodes)

Hatshepsut – The Woman who would become King (be sure to discuss the RELIGIOUS aspects)

The Story of Ancient Egypts Mysterious Queens () (be sure to discuss the religious aspects)

Instructions

Submit your final essay here. All work is screened for plagiarism.

The essay should be approximately 1500 words.

It MUST include MLA in-text citations for your primary text and 2 outside sources as well as an MLA Works Cited. Please consult Purdue OWL for help with both of these requirements.

Texts to pick from:

For the text you will focus on, you could pick something outside of the course you want to write about, but most students choose one of the readings they did a weekly “summary-response” on and do some additional research to dive deeper into that text. So, for example, students might write about the Lebanese movie The Insult, but this time read additional articles about the historical context of Palestine and Lebanon.

In other words, you can go back to a weekly response that you had more questions about or wanted to understand better out of personal curiosity. That makes it a little easier in a short semester than starting a whole new project, but you can also choose a text outside of our readings.

Please review the attached rubric.

Suggested Outline (Public Article or Scholarly Article)

  • Introduction to the topic and its importance/relevance (250 words)
  • What is the overarching argument that the author is trying to prove in this reading?
  • Introduce us to any key terms that we need to know to understand the text
  • Include the author’s background/perspective and how this impacts their approach to the topic.
  • Include a thesis statement that previews your response or argument about this piece
  • Delve deep into your favorite sub-section or sub-argument. (500 words)
  • What is the argument of this section? How does it support/prove the overarching argument?
  • What are 2 of the key pieces of evidence presented that support overarching argument?
  • Response/Analysis (500 words)
  • Use additional sources or supplemental materials to build your response
  • Potential areas of disagreement with you
  • Overall takeaways/discussion

Suggested Outline (Short Story or Film)

  • Introduction (250 words)
  • Brief overview of your text’s plot
  • Author’s purpose in engaging with a social issue
  • Thesis statement: your arguable, focused, sufficiently complex “takeâ€ on how the book engages with this social issue OR how you will use a particular discipline (history/philosophy/communications) to expand our understanding of this short story/movie
  • Lit Review (250 words)
  • Lay out the context of your social issue using 1 or 2 of your articles (depending on your choices of articles)
  • Frame it explicitly as the argument made by the specific author of the article (This helps you maintain clear boundaries in the “dialogueâ€ or conversation between your argument and the sources you are integrating)
  • Close Reading 1 (250 words)
  • Identify particularly compelling scenes from the story or movie that can help prove your argument about the text
  • Provide more depth on the relationship between the scenes and the social issue (integrate your research)
  • Close Reading 2 (250 words)
  • Conclusion (250 words)
  • How should we be thinking about the social issue now? How does your particular analysis of the short story/movie help us to ultimately think about the social issue?

Engage ALL related resources/materials, including Karenga chapter 10 (“Black Psychology”); read some Black Psychology literature and prepare to assess Black Psychology’s impact on, or at least unique contributions to, the Africana Studies discipline.
In paragraph format using specific support details from relevant resources, answer the following related questions in a thread you create (do not copy the assignment question before your essay answers):

-After engaging all of the Black Psychology resources/materials, what is your general impression of the goals and achievements of Black Psychology, especially so as a contributing subject to the Africana Studies discipline?

-Use the JSTOR research database (CSU library barcode needed) to identify an article/research study by a Black Psychologist from the Radical School (i.e., Akbar, Nobles, Myers, Kambon, White, Azibo, et al.) and based on the subject and arguments made, why in your view does this article fall within the Radical School of Black Psychology? (If needed, see the “Directions for Accessing JSTOR at CSU H.Q. Brown Library” resource)

-In your view how does any single theory or argument from Black Psychology similar or related to any issue raised in the previously covered subjects of Africana history, Africana social organization, Africana political organization, Africana economic organization, Africana creative productions or Africana spirituality; (or, what Black Psychology related information/research is useful for any of the issues raised in any of the other areas/subjects of Africana Studies)?

-In your view, how specifically does Black Psychology help to exemplify any one of the following Africana Studies grounds of relevance: “contributes to U.S. society’s understanding of itself,” “contributes to universities’ realization of its claim and challenge to teach truth,” “contributes to a new Social Science,” or “contributes to a socially conscious Black intelligentsia.”

-After engaging all of the Black Psychology related resources, what are you left wondering about, as sparked by specific details from any of the materials? (mandatory)

-BONUS QUESTION: Recalling that enslaved Africans resisted enslavement using tactics which can be categorized as day-to-day, escape, revolt, and cultural, in your view, what aspect (argument, theory, achievement,) of Black Psychology is akin, or relevant, to cultural resistance during the enslavement holocaust? (not mandatory)
