Project one outline

Learning Goal: I’m working on a writing exercise and need the explanation and answer to help me learn.

  1. Read through the prompt for Project 1, and take a look at all the notes that you have taken thus far, from the very first week of class (“Monomyth,” Liu on power, King on dreams, Campbell’s four functions or Gottschall’s “fiction,” Chang’s “Water Names,” and the notes from your TSIS readings).
  2. Write a “quick response” to the ONE of the prompt options. How would you, now, answer the question that it poses?
  3. Begin brainstorming ways to divide this idea into several paragraphs of your essay. Remember that each paragraph functions as a “mini-essay,” in a way, in the service of guiding the reader through your argument one point at a time. Campbell’s essay self-divides in a way, because it is based on the four functions (and on the changing nature of our stories). Gottschall also divides his essay by a series of points — use your summary skills to make sure you’re acknowledging all of his main arguments.
  4. Using the ROUGH outline shell from the second page of the prompt to plan, map out what you will cover paragraph by paragraph. Try to determine how you will support and provide evidence for each point you make. At this stage it’s fine if you don’t have every section filled in. You can find that information as you continue to read and reread your notes. If it is useful, you may use the following outline format.

***There is no “right” or “wrong” way to format this paper, but these guidelines (and what you’ve read in TSIS) should be helpful.***

  1. Save the file and upload it below for credit. You can add questions in the “comment” section as you upload if needed.
