You must answer all of the following questions:
1. In Sommerset Maugham’s “The Lotus Eater,” the narrator is extremely interested in meeting and learning more about Thomas Wilson. Explain this interest in Wilson. Why exactly is the narrator so fascinated by him? What does this fascination tell us about our narrator?
2. In “The Lotus Eater,” we are introduced to Thomas Wilson who is attempting a live an ideal and happy life. After finishing the story, analyze the ending and explain what the story could be suggesting about attaining happiness?
3. After reading Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery,” what do you think was the original purpose of the lottery? How has the ceremony changed and why do the people continue it?
4. Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” contains lots of examples of symbolism throughout. What do you think Jackson is trying to suggest about society and innate human behavior?
5. What do you think the cuckoo represents or symbolizes in Philip K. Dick’s “Beyond the Door?” Explain your answer.
