Learning Goal: I’m working on a management multi-part question and need the explanation and answer to help me learn.
An effective approach to examining leadership styles is to view them as a continuum based upon the amount of authority the leader allows the followers to have. From this viewpoint, the leader holds most of the authority in the directive style. Both the leader and followers share decision-making authority in the participative style. The free-rein style of leadership is characterized by the followers having decision-making authority, within certain parameters set by the leader.
