Learning Goal: I’m working on a english discussion question and need the explanation and answer to help me learn.

Introduction to Concept Check Assignments:

There are no exams in this class. Instead, every two units you will have a concept check assignment. Each assignment will contain 4 questions. You are required to answer two of your choice. These questions can address any material covered in the Canvas Module pages or in the required reading. These questions will require you to apply critical thinking skills and your understanding of the knowledge in order to answer them completely and thoroughly.

Concept Check Assignment #1 Directions:

Watch this video, it explains the assignment directions:

  • You can answer the questions in 2 formats:
    • An essay.
    • A video of you explaining your answer to the question.
  • References for both formats must be in either MLA or APA format.

Grading: Total=30 points

  • Content/Accuracy (15 points) – Is what you’re saying/writing true and based on current scientific consensus? Did you answer the question correctly and provide all necessary information to explain your answer completely?
  • Clarity (10 points) – Is your explanation easy to follow? Did you answer all parts of the question? Does it look like you put your assignment together at 11:00pm before it was due? Or, did you put some thought and preparation in to it?
  • References/Citations (5 points) – Must include all references including the web address of any website from which you get information. Turn this in to the instructor before presenting. If you aren’t sure how to format citations, use this: http://www.easybib.com/mla-format/report-citation

Questions- (choose only 2!):

  1. How did the first oceans on Earth form?
    • Be thorough and describe all processes/physical events that led to the formation of our first oceans.
  2. Why does the deep ocean floor largely look flat, even though we know it is not flat?
    • Be thorough in your response here and be sure to define and explain all details involved.
  3. State the name of and describe each of the 3 major marine provinces. Your description should address each point in the list below for EACH marine province:
    • any sub-types of each province
    • major physical features/characteristics found in each province
    • types of marine sediment commonly found in that province
    • any processes that might contribute to the formation/appearance of that province
  4. Describe, in detail, one topic you found interesting from Unit 1 or Unit 2. State what this fact/concept is and define/explain it. Further describe why you found it interesting and do a little bit of extra research into it. Find at least one external reference to cite in this question and include it in your reference list.
    • An external reference means you do not use any material that has been provided to you by me (the professor). These materials include: the textbook, articles, module pages, videos, optional resources. You can use these resources to support your answer and you must cite them, but it will not count as your 1 required external reference.

  • You should only need the textbook, articles/resources already provided, and the module pages to answer these questions. Some questions do specify you need to find an external source to dive deeper. Be sure to pay attention to directions.
    • Yes, the textbook and module pages should be included in a reference list, along with any other references/resources you use. Make sure these are reliable resources, Wikipedia is NOT a reliable source.
  • Still have question about how you’ll be graded? Check out the grading rubric that will be used to grade this assignment, provided at the bottom of this page.

Plagiarism Checker and Resubmission Instructions:

Written assignments will be run through the plagiarism checker. If you have over 30% noted plagiarized text, you must edit your submission and re-submit. In order to check this percentage, follow the steps below:

  1. Wait ~24 hours after you have submitted
  2. Go to the assignment and click on it.
  3. In the top right corner, it will say “Submission Details”, click on that.
  4. There, you should be able to see your plagiarism score after ~24 hours.

If your plagiarism score is over 30%, the most common reason is because you did not properly cite/reference information. Please edit your assignment and resubmit. You will have until Monday, March 13th, at 11:59pm to resubmit if needed.

Here’s how you check your plagiarism score (skip ahead to about minute 3):
