Situation Analysis Assignment

SITUATION ANALYSIS ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS
OVERVIEW
Difficult situations and frustrations occur in diplomatic situations. Whether one has no
experience in this field or has been working in it for a while, it is important to be able to identify,
anticipate and analyze such potential problems. In this assignment, you will be provided with
concrete examples of such situations, by reading Holbrooke’s book. This will be an exercise of
imagination and problems assessing and solving skills and will benefit both beginners and
professionals in the field of diplomacy and geopolitics.
INSTRUCTIONS
For this assignment, you will read the book To End a War by Richard Holbrooke. You will pick
a situation Holbrooke had to face, in his book. You will then write a 3-page analysis with
clear and concise points on what happened and what you would have done the same or
differently, had you been in Holbrooke’s place. In your analysis, including what happened and why,
followed by what you would have done and why.
Make sure to have solid and logically flowing arguments in your analysis.
If you would not have done anything differently, include arguments for why Holbrooke’s
strategy was the best answer to that situation.
Remember, it is not enough to state what was done or would have been done. Rational, logically
flowing arguments and descriptions are necessary.

Number of citations: minimum of 3 citations
