Difference between indentured servitude and enslavement\r
Indentured servitude is a kind of slavery in which a person is forced to work for a master in return for necessities like food and shelter or the opportunity to go to a new nation. Most indentured servants were young European men and women who signed contracts obligating them to serve a master for a certain period in exchange for passage to the colonies. The indentured servant would often be awarded a small piece of land and some basic supplies upon completion of their term.\r
On the other hand, enslavement has been practiced by many societies throughout time. Slavery is a system of oppression in which people are compelled to work against their will as the property of their master. Enslavement is a kind of human servitude in which one person is controlled and mistreated by another. Enslaved people were often denied fundamental liberties, including the ability to marry or get an education, and were also denied the right to own property.\r
Why did the Chesapeake region transition from a labor force of mostly indentured servants to a labor force dominated by enslaved people by the end of the 17th Century?\r
Several factors contributed to the shift in the Chesapeake region’s labor force from indentured servants to enslaved people by the close of the 17th century. The rising need for workers on the tobacco plantations was a significant factor in the change. The cultivation, harvest, and processing of tobacco required many people because of the crop’s high labor requirements. Shipping enslaved workers from Europe was costly, so plantation owners started looking elsewhere for labor.\r
As a result, enslaved Africans became more critical because they were easier to manage and cheaper to obtain than indentured laborers. In addition, planters found it more cost-effective to buy enslaved individuals who could labor for more extended periods since the death rate of indentured servants was high owing to the harsh circumstances in the colonies. . Last but not least, the exploitation of slave labor enabled landowners to amass vast fortunes and ushered in a social order in which those who could afford slaves were elevated to a higher social status.
