(As someone from India, I have a deep appreciation for food with bold and diverse flavors. Since moving to Dublin, I’ve found that Hispanic cuisine has been a great source of satisfying my spicy food cravings.
One of my favorite Hispanic dishes is Paella, a Spanish rice dish that’s traditionally made with saffron, paprika, garlic, onions, peppers, chicken, seafood, and/or chorizo. As a vegetarian, I’ve learned to make a vegetable version of Paella that’s just as delicious. I love the combination of flavors and textures! It’s a perfect dish to share with friends and family. Paella is a traditional and symbolic dish from Valencia, Spain, and is widely recognized as a symbol of Spanish cuisine.
In addition to its cultural significance, Paella is known for being a communal dish that’s meant to be shared with loved ones. The dish is typically served in a large, shallow pan, and diners use wooden spoons to scoop out portions. The communal aspect of Paella is part of what makes it such a beloved dish, as it brings people together to share in a delicious meal.
Another dish I love from Hispanic cuisine is Empanadas, a pastry typically filled with savory ingredients such as vegetables, beans, meat and sometimes cheese. I have only tried the vegetarian options and have really enjoyed it!. Empanadas are believed to have originated in Spain during the medieval period. As Spanish explorers and colonizers travelled to other parts of the world, they brought empanadas with them, and the dish eventually became a staple of Latin American cuisine. Each region has its own unique version of empanadas, with different fillings, pastry crusts, and cooking techniques. Today, empanadas are a popular street food and snack.
If you’re interested in trying to cook Hispanic cuisine at home, you can find some of the necessary ingredients at specialty stores such as Fallon & Byrne, which is located in the city center of Dublin. They stock a range of Spanish ingredients such as saffron and paprika.
Although there aren’t many Hispanic restaurants in Dublin, I’ve found some great places to eat, like The Port House, which serves authentic Spanish tapas.
Hispanic cuisine offers a rich and diverse range of flavors and dishes that are worth exploring!)
