Assignment Directions:
- View either American Beauty, The Wizard of Oz, Vertigo, Like Water for Chocolate, or Life is Beautiful in its entirety.
- In 2-3 coherent and organized paragraphs, analyze the symbolic use of color, mise-en-scene, and/or “visual subtext” in 2 key scenes from the film.
- In addition to telling what cinematic techniques are used, you must also analyze how the techniques used enhance and/or influence the tone, mood, and/or meaning of your chosen scenes.
- In your analysis, you must use relevant terminology from the textbook, supplemental videos, and/or assigned article on mise-en-scene.
- Briefly describe what is occurring in the scene/sequence. Then, provide a detailed analysis of what techniques are used and how these specific techniques enhance the viewing experience.
- Please refrain from simply telling the reader the plot of the film. Instead, you must focus on analyzing the color, mise-en-scene, and/or “visual subtext “ used in your chosen scenes. The more specific your analysis, the better.
- For all scenes you analyze, you must include timestamps.
- Use no outside sources. In fact, you should avoid reading/viewing any outside critiques or analysis of any films assigned for the course until after the term is over. I want to see your observations and analysis, your original interpretations. Inclusion of any outside source information on any written assignment for this course is considered plagiarism.
- Remember to proofread and edit your work. Use proper grammar, syntax, and diction.
