Sample for Assignment 1: Adapting a Novel Scene to a Musical Narrative Script

Scene: A confrontation between Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy from “Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austen.

Characters:

Elizabeth Bennet
Mr. Darcy
[Setting: A room at Netherfield Park]

(Song: “Pride and Prejudice”)

[Elizabeth enters the room, visibly upset.]

Elizabeth: (singing)
Oh, the nerve of that man,
To think that I’d care for his hand.
His pride and prejudice, so clear,
He’s the last man I’d want to be near.

[Mr. Darcy enters, overhearing Elizabeth’s song.]

Mr. Darcy: (spoken)
Miss Bennet, I must apologize if my words have caused you any distress.

Elizabeth: (spoken)
Your words, sir, have made your character quite clear.

[Mr. Darcy looks taken aback but tries to explain himself.]

Mr. Darcy: (singing)
I never meant to give offense,
My actions misunderstood, I’m dense.
Let me explain, I beg of you,
For my heart is honest and true.

[Elizabeth considers Mr. Darcy’s words and decides to give him a chance to redeem himself.]

Elizabeth: (spoken)
Very well, Mr. Darcy. You may explain yourself.

[Mr. Darcy begins to explain, and as the conversation progresses, both characters experience growth and understanding.]
