Ernest Hemingway was part of the “Lost Generations,” a cohort who came of age during World War I. His writings are often seen as representing his generation’s experiences. Hemingway’s writing style appeared simplistic as he rarely used words over 2 or 3 syllables. His writing style has been referenced as the “iceberg theory,” in which a simple style of writing that reveals minimal detail on the surface, hides deeper meanings below. Both of the works for this assignment are part of this “iceberg theory” genre – simplistic stories that are metaphors for American experiences during Hemingway’s life.
What do the two short stories – A Very Short Story (http://ouallinator.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/A-Very-Short-Story.pdf)
and The Two Hearted River (attached above) – tell us about America during the beginning of the twentieth century and the impact that World War I had had on her and her citizens. How is American society portrayed in these stories?
These questions are meant to elicit a brief essay. Students will identify, analyze, and evaluate arguments as they occur in the documents and develop well-reasoned arguments. Your paper must fully answer the above questions. You must have a thesis (argument) statement and use specific evidence to support your claims. BOTH stories must be referenced in this short paper.
Your answers should be drawn from thought and reflection of the posted class materials, the text book, and the assigned document. No sources from outside the class materials should be used or are necessary.
The essay should be a full 2-3 typed pages (double-spaced, and 12 point, Times New Roman font or equivalent, double spaced, 1 inch margins on all sides, single spaced header material, text of paper must start two lines below the title). Spelling and grammar will be taken into consideration. Proper citation MUST be used.
