Jan Gross encourages us to think deeply about the categories of perpetrators, bystanders, and victims as we study the Holocaust. In your essay, explain what we learn about these categories in Neighbors and compare these insights to other material assigned in Part III of our course. In your discussion, you should also explain what our course material says about how the roles of perpetrators, bystanders, and victims have shaped the memory and history of specific events related to the Holocaust.
An Analysis of the Roles of Perpetrators, Victims, and Bystanders during the Holocaust: Power, Fear, and Obedience
The paper must discuss Jan Gross’s book and these other sources:
1. Jan Gross, “Neighbors,” AND
2. the excerpt from Christopher Browning, “Ordinary Men,”
3. AND Peter Fritzsche, “Babi Yar, but not Auschwitz: What Did Germans Know about the Final Solution?”
(3 texts)
Also, use relevant information from chs. 6-8 in Epstein’s The paper must be grounded in the following:
1. The opening pages of Jan Gross, “Neighbors”
2. Information from the Power Point
3. Information from the Excel Spreadsheet
Additional Information: — Epstein’s textbook provides a very clear overview of WWII and the Holocaust. A smart step would be to choose the authors and events you want to cover, then review the related coverage in Epstein so that you have a good understanding of the context. — It is imperative that your paper has a clear focus. Create that focus by choosing events or concepts from the material that can be compared. How is the question of X treated in Gross, Browning, and the Treblinka episode, for example. –Challenge yourself to come up with a title that truly indicates your specific topic. “Three Authors on the Holocaust” is a bad title because it is too general. — Use the introduction of your paper to present the case you are going to make. What are the main issues? What are the complexities involved in those issues? The introduction should culminate in a clear thesis statement that explains your take on those issues. What will you demonstrate in this paper? (I would be happy to review your introductory lines if you send them to me in advance.) — Essays must include references that provide the name of the author and a page number. You can include references in parentheses: (Gross, 41) or (Epstein, 134). A “Works Cited” page is not necessary unless you use resources that are not assigned to the class. Then a “Works Cited” page is required. –Papers should be around 1650 words in length (+/-100 words; that’s around 5 1/2 pages if you double space and use 1″ margins). Please double-space your paper and include page numbers.
