Assessment:

An essay analyzing self-involvement with art exhibitions, hands-on-experiences in art, or art related research on careers, trends, history or techniques. A grading rubric is located in the syllabus. The total value of the paper is 100 points.

Activity learning objectives:

  • Identify art by artist, exhibit, society, movement, trend, technique and/or historical period. (Course Objectives # 1, 3 in syllabus)
  • Examine, experiment and/or create within the different aspects of the fine arts. (CO# 4, 6)
  • Relate, evaluate and critique the experience though essay on how the knowledge impacts your life. (CO# 5, 7, 8)


Instructions:



Each student must attend, visit, or participate in one of the below categories and write an essay about the learning experience.

When choosing a category, pick an area that you have little to no experience. Choice something that you have not done before, experience something you have tried by looking at it in a new way, or research something that you are interested into a further extent. Your choices need to fall under Fine Art and within the dates of the semester the course is being offered.


Categories to choose from are the following:


1. Exhibits– Visit two or more exhibits at an art museum or gallery. 
Record the following information:
Where are the exhibits, who are the artists and what is the theme or subject of each exhibit.  Are the exhibits part of ongoing exhibitions on display at the museum or gallery or a temporary showing?  If temporary, what are the dates the exhibit is held. What dates, timeframe, and/or movement was the artwork created in. After analyzing each exhibit, examine what you learned from it and how it impacts you on a personal level. In conclusion, relate how the overall experience has impacted you now and how it could influence future experiences or activities.

2. Workshop– Attend/participate in an art seminar or workshop.
Record the following information:
State where, when, and what type of workshop/seminar you are participating in. Who is the instructor(s)? What is the background of the instructor relating to the workshop/seminar? Describe the activities and/or processes of the event. Evaluate and/or critique the process of the event including facts and details. After analyzing the event, examine what you learned from it and how it impacts you on a personal level. In conclusion, relate how the overall experience has impacted you now and how it could influence future experiences or activities.

3. Participate– Participate as an artist in an art festival or art exhibit.
Record the following information:
State where, when and what type of art festival/exhibit you are participated in. What is the title or name of the festival/exhibit? Describe the process of the festival/exhibit and your participation. Evaluate and/or critique the process of the event including facts and details. After analyzing the event, examine what you learned from it and how it impacts you on a personal level. In conclusion, relate how the overall experience has impacted you now and how it could influence future experiences or activities.

4. Volunteer– Volunteer in an art festival, exhibit, or event.
Record the following information:
State where, when, and what type of art festival, exhibit, or event. What is the title or name of the festival/exhibit/event? Describe the process and timeline of the event. You must 5 or more hours of volunteer time. Discuss the organization and event details. State what you job duties were during the event. Evaluate and/or critique the process of the event including facts and details. After analyzing the event, examine what you learned from it and how it impacts you on a personal level. In conclusion, relate how the overall experience has impacted you now and how it could influence future experiences or activities.

5. Club Member– Be an active member in an art related club or organization.
Record the following information:
State what art club you are a member of. Is it a club in a high school, college, or community? You must be an active member within the current semester and participate in 3 or more meetings or activities hosted by the club. Describe each meeting or activity.  Discuss and evaluate what you learn form each meeting or activity including facts and/or descriptive details. In conclusion, relate how the overall experience has impacted you now and how it could influence future experiences or activities.

6. Research– Research an art related career field, art trends, art techniques and mediums, or an area of art history. (Use MLA research guidelines when documenting sources.)
Record the following information:
State what art related career field, art trends, art techniques and mediums, or an area of art history you will be researching. Three or more sources must be used and documentation must be done in the MLA style. Describe with documented details the art topic you selected for research and why you selected the topic. Discuss and evaluate what you learn from the research. In conclusion, relate how the overall research has impacted your knowledge and thought process within the area of study. How could the new knowledge influence you with future experiences or activities?

Details for writing and submitting the essay from the chosen topics above:
The essay should be three pages or longer in length plus have documentation in a works cited page where applies. Optional photos and/or handouts may be included in addition to the essay. Pages may be double spaced and font should not be larger than 12 point. The paper needs to be in WORD and submitted under the assignment on or before the deadline. When submitting the paper, you will need to submit it in SafeAssign under the assignment to be checked for plagiarism. Use MLA style when documenting sources and documenting direct quotes.  If using direct quotes, do not use over two. Write the paper putting the information into your own wording and document sources.


The paper should include a header with your name and art category selected for the project.  An Introduction paragraph with three or more full sentences and a thesis statement discussing the overview of the project should be included. The body of the paper needs to include the details listed under the art category selected. Be sure to include an overview of the project and the personal impact it had on you in the conclusion. The conclusion needs three or more sentences. If applicable to the project category include a works cited page listing resources.
