write an analytical review essay that connects Ian Hurd’s How To Do Things with International Law and Adom Getachew’s Worldmaking After Empire: The Rise and Fall of Self-Determination.
In particular, the essay should identify two (2) recurring themes or concepts we’ve used throughout the term that are challenged or critiqued or re-interpreted by the authors of our Book Club selections. The essay should include a synopsis of each book; an explanation of each concept and a discussion of how each is treated differently by the book; and a conclusion that weaves ideas from both books together to yield new insight.
You are welcome to include sources found elsewhere on the syllabus or shared throughout the course, but you are not permitted to conduct external research. The goal of this assignment is to gauge students’ comprehension of the books and their ability to synthesize ideas from the texts, not their research prowess. All quotes and referenced material must be cited in accordance with any reputable style guide of your choosing.
