In recent years, the urban lexicon has added the term ‘bromance’ to describe a very close, but non-romantic, relationship between two males. While the term is not really accepted as a scientifically-valid label, the construct of brotherly love has long been the topic of both philosophical and empirical discussion. Additionally, the concept of the ‘bromance’ is gender-specific in that it includes certain connotations and relational bonds that dominate interpersonal interactions more common to males. For this paper, analyze the ‘bromance’ in the context of contemporary research on male interpersonal relations. As part of your analysis, discuss the gender-specific nature of the ‘bromance’ and how this is distinct from the close interpersonal relationships formed by females. Finally, consider the importance, or lack thereof, of ‘bromantic’ relationships in healthy male socialization.
