For an organization to successfully attract, select and recruit a diverseemployee base, they need to analyze their current efforts to ensure they are doing everythingnecessary to retain a diverse talent. Once management begins to uncover what needs to bechanged within the organization, it is up to them to implement the changes.To attract diverse Employees, managers can evaluate what is seen from an outsideperspective. They can start by looking at the organization’s website and hiring webpage orrecruiting brochure. Does it represent surface level diversity with varying ages, races, and genderis portrayed in the images? If not, now is a perfect time to update those items. Managementshould also consider reviewing job descriptions. Ensuring all job descriptions are free ofinequalities and have a strong focus on varied talents and backgrounds will attract the diverseworkforce an organization is wanting.The effort managers put into their recruiting practices can also help ensure a diverseworkforce. Where are the positions being posted? Is management posting open positions onwebsites and job boards that focus on the underrepresented workforce in your organization? Ifnot and all positions are posted in the same places, management should analyze who theunderrepresented are and make an effort to recruit to that demographic.The selection process is where an organization’s hiring process is proved effective tobring on diverse employees. One way management can encourage diversity is to remove allpersonal information from resumes like name, address, education, dates, and so on. By removingthis information the reviewer will have less bias and be able to focus on the experience andqualifications of the applicant. After the personal information has been removed, having a third-
party review the applications with the job specific information only will help ensure a diversecandidate selection. Having an outside interview panel of people from other organizations ordepartments can also help to encourage diversity in the first round of interviews.Having a diverse workforce is not only good for the organization, but also good for theemployees within the organization. Having a diverse workforce proves to candidates that theorganization cares about their individual needs and focuses on all aspects of the businessincluding building trust, job satisfaction, and having more engaged, happy employees.
