Annotated
Bibliography Assignment Instructions
This assignment is broken
into two parts and counts as the key assignment for this class. Passing my
class requires successful completion of this assignment.
In Part 1 of the assignment, I
located 6-7 scholarly and peer-reviewed sources and submitted them as a list of
citations in APA style (these are all listed under “Citations” on the Annotated
Bibliography Chart I provided). They are all related to one digital literacy
topic of my choice (I chose propaganda).
The annotated bibliography is
usually the first step before writing a research paper in academic writing, so
the articles are all related and relevant to the topic of propaganda. For this
specific annotated bibliography, though, I’m going to be
using the information from the sources I found in my research to help me design
an 8th-grade lesson in which I’ll be introducing students to the
concept from my annotated bibliography (about identifying and analyzing propaganda
used in the media) and then giving them introductory practice with the concept
(by having them create their own advertisements with propaganda by incorporating
persuasive writing techniques—especially from the Persuasive Writing
(Reading Rockets) source I found and listed on my Annotated Bibliography Chart).
In Part 2 (this part of
the assignment), you will complete
the annotated bibliography by adding to my list of sources a (1-2 paragraph)
Summary, a (1-2 paragraph) Analysis, and a (1-2 paragraph) Evaluation of the sources. You will
fill in this information on the Annotated Bibliography Chart document I
provided. I will attach instructions of how to get access to reading the sources on my school website.
You must provide all 7
sources with annotations.
Requirements: Each annotation must include:
- A properly-formatted APA citation of the source
- A Summary of the source in your own words,
- An Analysis that critiques the article’s strengths,
weaknesses, and accuracy - An Evaluation that explains how this source
contributed to your understanding of this topic.
Chosen Topic: Propaganda
Grading: The annotations will be scored on the number of
sources, APA formatting (which I already did in Part 1 of the assignment and
have the citations listed on the Annotated Bibliography Chart), and annotation
quality—which is what you will be taking care of. 6 sources is the minimum
for this assignment, and 6 high-quality sources with high-quality
annotations will earn me an A for my graduate course.
Example of a high-quality
citation and annotation:
Lewandowsky,
S., Ecker, U. K. H., & Cook, J. (2017). Beyond Misinformation:
Understanding and Coping with the “Post-Truth” Era. Journal of Applied
Research in Memory and Cognition, 6(4), 353–369. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jarmac.2017.07.008
Summary: In this
introduction to a special edition of a cognitive psychology journal,
Lewandowsky and colleagues highlight widespread problems regarding “fake news” and
misinformation leading up to and following the 2016 presidential election.
These cognitive psychologists point out the larger social context for
misinformation, as well as using the term “techno cognition” to describe an
approach to fighting misinformation that combines technological principles and
cognitive psychology.
Analysis: This article is
from a prominent research journal and is co-authored by multiple experts in the
field. It introduces and defines
terminology on the topic but does not share research findings or report on a
study. Instead, it is more of an
informative article.
Evaluation: This source
contributed to my understanding of misinformation by highlighting that “fake
news” represents a larger sociocultural set of discourses, and that information
environments can be characterized by political polarization in the media,
significantly decreased trust in scientific processes, and an abundance of
online information. Lewandowsky and colleagues also expressed a lot of concern
and worry, which helped me view the problem of “fake news” as a larger and more
urgent concern.
