In your essay, you will discuss the ideas of at least two of the authors(Tocqueville, Barbie Zelizer, Nicholas Lemann, George Anastaplo)and how different media forms impact the kinds of messages that can be communicated through these forms or the kinds of responses and thoughts that are elicited in those who receive these messages. In order to test or shed more light on these authors’ theories, you will choose a single important event or news item (recent or historic) that was covered/captured/discussed in at least three different forms of media (e.g. written news article, poem, radio report, podcast, photograph, television, film clip, etc.) and reflect on the ways that the same subject was approached in the different media forms you have chosen and to what extent the forms seem to have influenced the message in these examples.
On the basis of your reflections and analysis, your essay should present and defend a clear thesis about whether or not, or how/to what extent, different media of communication shape the message for the news item/topic you examine, and how your findings relate to the theories of the authors you choose to discuss. Your thesis should be supported by clear and well-reasoned arguments and evidence cited from your chosen examples and your chosen authors. Research external to our readings and the examples you choose is not required for the essay, however, if you would like to make use of an external source, you may request to do so. (All sources that you reference or that shape your thinking must be properly cited.)
Your essays should follow the standard requirements of an argumentative essay and be written clearly, and carefully proofread. The required length is 7-9 pages double-spaced in Times New Roman font size 12. Whether you use footnotes or in-text citations, all sources must be properly cited according to Chicago Manual, MLA or APA requirements
