Assignment: Impact of Culture: Interviewing a Person from a different background

The textbook for this class takes a multicultural approach to development. For this assignment, you will be interviewing someone who was born and grew up in a different country than the one you grew up in and comparing to your own experiences. The person you chose needs to be at least 18 years of age, as someone younger than that cannot legally consent to be interviewed.

Before starting, be sure to read this assignment in total, so you are clear what needs to be done. Assignment Value: 75 points

Your report should focus on differences in developmental practices in at least five areas (e.g things like parenting, attitudes towards things like breast feeding, early childhood education, gender roles, value of education, mating and courtship standards, attitudes toward jobs/careers and cultural expectations etc) between your culture and that of the person you are interviewing.  Label each section with the topic it is covering.

Your report should begin with a short biographical sketch of the person you interviewed (this means things like their age, gender, family of origin, where they grew up, how old they were when they left if appropriate and so forth), your questions and the interviewee’s responses.

Then, you will do the same for yourself as you will be comparing the two sets of experiences in the five areas you have chosen.

If the person you interview emigrated to this country, what do they see as the key differences? If you were born and raised in another country, and interview someone who was born and grew up in the U.S., what do you see as the major differences?

You will then present your own conclusions about similarities and differences in developmental between your culture and that of the person interviewed while linking to our text. Do the theories we have been covering make sense for both cultures? Why or why not? You will need to provide academic support for your analysis.

Before you conduct the interview, you should make a list of topics you wish to cover in the interview and then construct a series of specific questions you wish to ask the person to make sure all topics are covered.  This will help you use your time efficiently, and you don’t want to run out of questions. Some interviewees will give very brief answers, others will be more forthcoming. Use the information in the second paragraph to generate your list of questions.

How did information from our text help you with this assignment? Be sure to correctly acknowledge that information with proper citations in the body of your writing.

Also, do not write this up as question and answer, but instead as an integrated essay, where it is clear as you move from paragraph to paragraph, what areas you are covering. That is why you are asked to label each section.

Then, at the end, attach an Appendix that includes your Questions and Answers

Length? This should be 4-5 pages, double-spaced, in APA format. This means Times New Roman 12 pt font, about 1” margins (I don’t measure but I can tell if they are very wide to try to stretch out your work).

Title page does not count as a page, nor does your reference page or the appendix.. Also, basic writing mechanics (spelling, grammar, complete sentences) count so be sure to proofread. If this is an area of weakness for you, you can make use of the MC Writing Center to be sure your writing mechanics are not going to cost you points.
