Prompt: Choose your favorite character from Beowulf,
Grendel, or Le Morte d’ Arthur. What modern values and/or universal
themes are evident in the character? What does this tell us about how
literature reflects society, culture, place, and/or history?
Write
a 450–500-word essay and justify your thoughts with text evidence (cited
in-text) and research from academic sources. Three sources must be taken from
an academic database not a search engine. There is one clear, well-focused thesis statement (claim/argument) that
effectively addresses the prompt. Student demonstrates in-depth
understanding of both the character and the universal theme represented within
the text. The analysis encourages the audience to think about
how the character reflects modern society/culture. Student uses at least three
direct, relevant, and well-chosen short quotes to support all claims.
