Writing the Final Paper of 3500-4500 Words:
1) “BE ARGUMENTATIVE” Remember, we are looking for argumentative papers, that is to say, papers that argue on behalf of, and defend, a SINGLE, specific ethical thesis or point.
2) “GO DEEP” Some students may be tempted to try to treat every aspect of one over-arching topic. It is instead advisable and preferable to go deep with regards to a specific area, rather than writing in broad and unfocused terms and remaining at what would necessarily be the level of the general.
3) “TALK MORAL” The thesis itself must deal with a bioethical/ethical or moral aspect of a situation. For example, a medical paper or survey of what protocols and specific drugs are currently used in emergency room settings for rape victims and what their mechanisms of action are, would not be sufficient for a paper. A survey of current laws or legislation would also not be acceptable. There needs to be a clear moral argument of some kind advanced and defended throughout the paper. Thus your paper will need to avoid focusing on a purely scientific, legal, or historical aspect.
4) “STYLE GUIDELINES” Guidelines for style for the final 3500 – 4500 word Certification Program paper are attached below. Please note that your paper must be your original work for this Program; it cannot be a resubmission of work you have submitted or developed elsewhere. In general, when style or format information is not included in the attached Guidelines, your paper will be expected to follow the latest edition of The Chicago Manual of Style (University of Chicago Press). 5) “HOW TO SUBMIT” The final paper should be e-mailed as a Microsoft Word attachment (not a PDF)
6) “DON’T PLAGIARIZE” — You must be scrupulous about the use of ideas and quotations from others. Please familiarize yourself with the following two sources regarding plagiarism, which summarize the need for care and attention in the midst of the widespread, nay universal, temptation to copy and paste off the internet. This is very important!
