ESSAY STRUCTURE
Introduction – this includes but is not limited to 3 main elements:
1. A topic sentence (introducing the subject),
2. A thesis statement (outlining your argument – you will be arguing against the aforementioned statement. this needs to be one sentence encapsulating your argument, it needs to be bold and clearly express your position in relation to the topic)
3. A summary of the main supporting points in the order you will discuss them in the essay. These need to relate and defend the thesis
Body – develops the argument and provides credible evidence from your research. Each body paragraph needs a clear topic sentence and each paragraph should end on a transitional sentence, leading into the next paragraph. Each paragraph requires at least 2 footnotes.
Conclusion – do not add new information to the conclusion, the thesis and summary in the introduction must match but not in exactly the same words. Use the conclusion as an opportunity to restate your argument more effectively and potentially explore the future directions.
ACADEMIC TONE
The correct academic tone is formal, direct, factual and detached with thirdperson point of view. Avoid personal pronouns
QUOTES AND PARAPHRASES (VERY IMPORTANT)
– Direct quotes must be in inverted commas with a footnote
– Paraphrases (other people’s ideas in your words) do not need inverted commas but they do need footnotes
– The first time you mention an author in the body of the essay use their fullname and a brief job description. After this, refer to them only by surname
– Quotes should be brief, pointed and have purpose
REFERENCING (VERY IMPORTANT)
– The essay needs footnotes and a bibliography (Chicago Style)
– Footnotes appear at the bottom of the page which contains the quote or paraphrase. Use only one footnote number for each citation. Do not use multiple footnote numbers for a single citation. If you want to show multiple sources for the same paraphrase, provide one footnote number and show the sources in the actual footnote at the bottom of the page separated by a semicolon. Please provide the exact page number for the citation in the footnotes.
-The bibliography appears at the end of the essay and is arranged alphabetically by authors’ surnames. Provide the full page range for journal articles and book chapters in the bibliography
