The Reflection Paper is intended to demonstrate the student’s understanding and application of core competencies and theoretical perspectives and integrate them into a personal growth and professional development plan. This paper should be around 4 – 6 pages not counting the title or reference page. There is no set number of resources required although it is expected that students will reference Kottler, Corey, and any other applicable scholarly sources. The format of the paper should be along these lines:
based on insights they’ve gained from reading, class lecture, class discussion, skills practice, and peer review
Title Page
Brief Introduction (include a simple overview of the body of your paper followed by a thesis statement that summarizes the theme/focus of your paper.
Background (include a very brief introduction of self and applicable biographical information that flows into a self-evaluation of strengths and limitations related to core competencies of effective counselors.
Self-Analysis (using Kottler’s book – On Being a Therapist, apply key elements of his outline to your own potential as a therapist)
Growth and Development (finally conclude with a plan for personal and professional growth and development touching on what type of ministry you are preparing for, what type of preparation you’ll need e.g., education, certification/licensure, experience, and self-care. Your sense of calling or future career plans do not have to be fully conceptualized at this point but select a path that fits your current sense as if it were clear to you now.)
