– Your review should have four sections. First, introduce the book, explaining what it is broadly
about and giving an initial sense of your impressions.
– Next, provide a brief summary of the book’s argument, paying attention to methodology and
any particularly important findings the author(s) report.
– Then, critically react to the book. For example, are you convinced by it? Why or why not?
What has the author done well? What has the author failed to do?
– Finally, conclude by assessing the book’s overall importance. If it is worth reading, who would
be interested?
– The body of your review should be between 700-800 words. This is a strict limit. Please print
your word count in bold at the end of the review. If you cite specific passages, simply place the
page numbers in parentheses, i.e. (p. 21-23). All reviews should be double-spaced, be written in
a font equivalent to 12 pt Times New Roman, and have standard one inch margins.
– The review will be due by the end of class on April 7, but you are welcome to submit your
review any time before then. Late reviews will be penalized one grade (i.e. an A becomes an
A-) for every day past the deadline.
