In my first job,
I worked in the private sector.
I was surrounded by highly educated individuals.
We didn’t offer many different kinds of services and specialized in certain tasks.
In this private company, there were clearly defined roles and responsibilities.
We worked in small groups with a total of 400 people in the organization.
We were all paid well.
I then accepted a job in the public sector.
There is a total of 3000 employees. over 260 different services were offered to the public.
There was an undefined organizational chart and unclear lines of reporting for employees which made departments inefficient.
Employees had limited education and the pay for most employees was relatively low.
I was brought in on a special contract which meant I was paid much more than other people and the team knew it.
I was put in a team leader role but I experienced a large amount of resistance from the people I worked with.
I felt like an outsider.
I was ignored and was unable to inspire my team as they questioned why I deserved the position I had.
I would present a proposal to my manager who was responsive and gave me the green light to get started but when I needed to actually get my team to deliver it was very difficult.
